Service User Advisory Board

The Big C Service User Advisory Board is led by service users. It is an alliance of people affected by cancer who use Big C services, who volunteer their time to help us improve and develop our support services. The group is not a support group but develops and maintain links with support groups facilitated by Big C and signposts individuals to them where appropriate.

The main aims of the Board are to enable service users:

  • cancer specific feedback to be coordinated and shared
  • influence the review and development of Big C services by using service users experiences
  • influence the development of Big C projects and plans, to ensure services become more responsive to the needs of service users

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in July 2019 and after being supported so well by Big C, I wanted to be involved to support other cancer patients and families in Norfolk. My youngest child was just 1 when I was diagnosed, and my older children were able to fundraise for the charity. Visiting the centre at NNUH was a great support to us all.

I returned to work in April 2021 as a Health and Wellbeing Coach, a role I very much enjoy! My day-to-day role involves supporting people to improve their health and wellbeing by making positive behaviour changes. I really enjoy listening to others and making a difference where I can.

I volunteer on the advisory board, because I want to help Big C as much as I can. They were there for me during my breast cancer ilness in 2019 and during covid when I was isolated through my 6 months chemo and radiotherapy by phone call appointments.

I also volunteer once a month on the ‘Look Good Feel Better’ workshops at the Norwich City Support Centre on Dereham Road.

Big C has a special place in heart.

As somebody with a Learning Disabilty I am passionate about how people like me receive medical clinical care and after care.

I was invited to get involved after I approached Big C for support with a benefits check.
