New research grants round announced

An invitation for new research PhD studentship grant applications has been announced by Big C.

A total of £150,000 will be awarded to support PhD students at the University of East Anglia whose research will benefit cancer patients.

Applications are welcomed from all institutions across the Norwich Research Park, and the regional NHS trusts across all disciplines, including the social sciences, from those working on projects that have potential benefit to those affected by cancer, now or in the future. Applications in all areas of cancer research are welcomed, including prevention, lifestyle (e.g. diet, physical activity etc), fundamental mechanisms, diagnostics and novel therapies.

£2.1 million invested by Big C

Unusually for a local, independent, charity, Big C has awarded research grants since the early days of the organisation. Over the past seven years alone, Big C has invested £2.1 million into cancer research at the Norwich Research Park. These projects have resulted in transformative advances in bowel, prostate and blood cancers amongst others, making a local, national and international difference in the fight against cancer now and for tomorrow.

Confirmation of the new research grants round came this week from Dr Chris Bushby who was hosting a special ‘Norwich Cancer Research Showcase’ event exploring 20 years of innovating cancer research, funded by the local cancer charity at the Norwich Research Park. Speaking and presenting at the event were leading UEA and other Norwich based cancer scientists who have made significant contributions to cancer research.

The funding available will be allocated to support a percentage of the PhD fees and the full stipend (at nominal rates for EU nationals) to a maximum of £50,000 per PhD over three years. The investment will be made in accordance with Big C’s governance framework for the consideration and review of grant applications. Applications will be peer reviewed and subject to consideration by Big C’s Research Advisory Panel of independent scientific experts and Big C Trustees, before the awards will be announced.
