About us FAQs

Take a look at the frequently asked questions about us, below. If you have a question that doesn’t appear, please get in touch and we’ll be happy to help you.

What is Big C?

Big C Cancer Charity is here for anyone affected by cancer at any stage, from diagnosis and during treatment to life beyond cancer. You may be living with cancer yourself or it may be affecting someone close to you. Since the charity was established in Norfolk in 1980, we’ve been dedicated to supporting thousands of people in Norfolk and North Suffolk.

What does Big C do?

Big C is one of East Anglia’s largest cancer charities, having raised £40 million since it was founded 40 years ago. Today, Big C’s loyal supporters help the charity raise on average £3 million pounds every year to help those in our community who are affected by cancer.

What are Big C’s core values?

Big C’s core values are Respect, Empathy, Support, Trust and Honesty.

They provide a benchmark for behaviour across the organisation. If you are passionate about joining our mission, share these values, and have the skills and experience we are looking for, we would love to hear from you.

How do I access support?

There is no need to be referred into our services. You can simply call our freephone support line on 0800 092 7640, email support@big-c.co.uk, or visit one of our Centres.

Is Big C part of the NHS?

Big C is an independent charity and we don’t receive any government funding. We are reliant on the generosity of our supporters and funders. However, we have built strong working relationships and collaborations with the key local hospitals, GPs and primary care trusts throughout the region. Our seven support centres and hubs are located through the region and work closely with their local NHS organisations. We endeavour to support the NHS to roll out the NHS longer term cancer plan. For more than 40 years we’ve been providing holistic support for those with cancer, something the NHS now sees as a key requirement for cancer care.

How can I get involved with Big C?

There are so many ways you can get involved with our work. From donating your good quality unwanted items or shopping in one of our 11 shops, to volunteering, taking on a challenge or signing your company up for a fundraising event.

How do I become a volunteer?

We are always looking to welcome new volunteers right across the organisation. Whether you’re interested in helping at our support centres, shops, at our fundraising events or at our Head Office. Volunteering is a great way to spend some free time, meet new people, and gain experience in the charity, retail and events sectors.

Who can volunteer?

Anyone can volunteer with Big C. We’re inclusive and welcome applications from all individuals that need reasonable adjustments. We actively encourage applications from:

  • Young people aged 14-16 years (parental consent will be required and if you’re of school age, we’ll need to obtain a work permit)
  • Work experience placements
  • Duke of Edinburgh placements
  • Corporate volunteer days
  • Trained professionals including counsellors, complementary therapists, and physiotherapists
