Family support

Cancer affects not just the patient, but the entire family. Big C has launched a new programme of holistic care and support aimed at children with a cancer diagnosis and their families, as well as families going through a cancer diagnosis.

We have a specially designed family friendly space based at our NNUH Centre in the grounds of the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, however, support can be provided across all our Big C centres, in person and online, ensuring your family receives the support you need in a way that suits you best.

How can we support you?

If you live in Norfolk or the surrounding area, and a child or family member is receiving treatment locally or further afield, our team can work with you to ensure you receive the right support.

This may include emotional/psychological support, counselling, complementary therapies, welfare rights advice and opportunities to engage in our play/craft-based activities.

Our family support is tailored to each family, so we’ll guide you through the options and suggest ways we can work with you.

As children are involved, we will always make first contact with a parent/guardian and have an appointment with them first without the child/children being present to have a chat about support needs, plus the impact on the child/children. This then helps us identify next steps tailored to each family individually.

We have the guidance and expertise of a dedicated Educational Psychologist, to help navigate the complexities of a cancer diagnosis’ impact on your family.

Our Educational Psychologist can help with how parents and children cope with a cancer diagnosis, ensuring positive long-term adjustment, providing holistic support when it comes to navigating school, learning emotional wellbeing and family dynamics.

At times we may signpost families to the appropriate support provided by other organisations who specialise in certain areas of need.

This has been made possible by the generous support of the Ladies in League Against Cancer.

“The family support room is so welcoming with a variety of activities for children of all ages to be engaged with. This enabled me to have a lovely open conversation with Support Worker Emma, without having to worry about the children.”
