Samantha’s story
Samantha first came to Big C after receiving her cancer diagnosis, when the amount of information and appointments felt overwhelming. This is her story…
After being told she had cancer, Samantha found herself trying to process the enormous amount of information while being swept up in a sea of medical procedures and appointments.
The first time she walked into the Big C support centre at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, she immediately noticed how different it felt from the clinical environment she had become used to.
“The volunteers make you feel so welcome and the environment is calm and relaxing,” Samantha said.
Samantha has been amazed by the range of support available through Big C, designed to meet the different needs of people affected by cancer. For her, the online exercise classes have been especially valuable. When she was unable to go to the gym, either because she was vulnerable during chemotherapy or did not feel able to manage more strenuous exercise, the yoga and Pilates classes gave her a safe and gentle way to keep moving.
“The yoga and Pilates classes have been wonderful. They are such a great way to keep yourself moving, but at your own pace and in your own home so you feel safe. The Big C instructor is amazing and the classes are perfect.”
Samantha has also accessed complementary therapies, counselling and nutrition support through Big C. She says the complementary therapies have been a much-needed boost while dealing with side effects and fatigue, as well as a welcome break from the clinical side of treatment.
Samantha said, “Big C has provided support beyond medical treatment, offering a safe, calm place to go and somewhere to step away from the chaos. I am so very grateful.”
