What is Trichology?

What is Trichology?

What is Trichology?

By Shelley Line
Local Trichologist Shelley Line is now offering her services to Big C service users who are living with and beyond cancer.
Below she explains what Trichology is and how her services may be of benefit to those experiencing hair loss or thinning due to treatment.

Trichology is the medical term given to the study of the hair and scalp, specifically it relates to the structure, function and diseases of the hair and scalp.

The main role of a Trichologist is to assist individuals with any problems arising from the hair and scalp. This is achieved by carrying out a comprehensive consultation, considering any issues that may have arisen due to general health and lifestyle.

Regardless of gender or age suffering from hair loss, damage or disease of the scalp can be incredibly troubling and even debilitating. With the correct consultation, diagnosis, advice and treatment we can work with you to resolve hair and scalp concerns.

You may be wondering what is the difference between a Hairdresser and Trichologist.

A Trichologist may be a hair stylist who has progressed their career to study and qualify in subjects including anatomy & physiology, genetics, microscopy, nutrition, chemistry and disorders of the hair and scalp.

Although advanced hairdressing qualifications studies some aspects of hair and scalp disorders the specific training, trichology is much more rigorous and is a combination of both theory and practical work. Trichology is less about how your hairstyle looks and instead focuses how your hair grows and its internal health.

Consultations and Social distancing

New regulations have enforced new working practices and with people using the Big C services being more vulnerable, it is essential that we adapt the way we work with the clients, the best route currently is to carry out a detailed e-consultations via video link, email or a discussion on the telephone.

Although it will not be possible to carry out an examination of the scalp or hair at this time, we can offer advice and help relating to hair and scalp issues, especially arising from Cancer treatment and medication. Some combinations of treatment are more likely to cause hair loss than others.

The consultation will include explanations and empathy relating to the side effects which can cause hair loss and will always be conducted with the strictest of confidence.  We will always heed the advice and recommendation from your consultant.

In addition, offering support to find appropriate resources for alternative ways of wearing your hair and the use of accessories to use during treatment.

What to expect during your consultation

The advice given to each client is completely unique and personalised to their circumstances, treatment and personal choices.

Firstly, you will have a consultation either by email, telephone or video conference whichever you prefer. This consultation is in depth and will help your Trichologist identify aspects of your general health, lifestyle, hairdressing practices and habits.

After the consultation your Trichologist will collate the information that you have provided and with further research will create a hypothesis to identify the condition with which you are presenting.

Your Trichologist can identify a treatment plan that will suit you and help you to deal with your concerns.  The outcomes from this plan will be monitored and tailored to your treatment journey.

We will be there to help along the way!
