We are always looking for volunteers including in our Support Centres, shops and at our Fundraising events. Volunteering is a great way to spend some free time, meet new people, and gain experience.

Update on Big C's Welfare Advice

By Kylie Sutton

Despite our Centres being temporarily closed due to the current situation with Covid-19, Big C is still here to help support those affected by cancer.

One service we are still able to offer over the phone is our Welfare Advice in partnership with Citizens Advice Diss, Thetford and District.

Whether you have been diagnosed yourself, or you are looking after someone with cancer, our trained advisors are here to talk you through any practical or financial concerns.

Being diagnosed with cancer can be difficult and as well as having to undergo treatment it can have an impact on your financial situation. You may earn less due to cutting down at work or even find you stop work completely. There can be other extra expenses to consider such as hospital parking and heating costs.

Due to the current situation, for many people diagnosed with cancer you may be wondering how COVID-19 may impact your access to welfare benefits or you may now need to apply for these.

The UK benefits system can be confusing, there are many benefits available for people living with and beyond cancer, including help for people in hospital, on a low income, disabled, over pension age, or parents and carers.

Our specialist advisors are here to help you find out about  benefits you may be entitled to, as well as other financial assistance that may be available to you. Not only will they help identify what help you may be able to get, they will also provide support through every step, so you can focus on your treatment.

Big C offer a range of financial support and advice including:

  • Benefits (PIP, Attendance Allowance etc)
  • Loans
  • Housing
  • Employment issues
  • Travel expenses
  • Blue badge applications
  • Bus passes
  • Help completing applications/forms

If you’re interested in our Welfare Advice Programme, we are now offering this as phone appointments only.

Please Call our Support Team for free on  0800 092 7640  (Mon – Fri 9am- 5pm) for more information and to arrange a telephone consultation with one of our specialist advisors.

We can help to improve your quality of life, physical health, and mental wellbeing.

Some people take to the skies, run, jump, walk, swim and cycle whilst others make tea, bake cakes or shave heads.

What will you do to make a difference?

Two men from Norfolk who found themselves with cancer and having to travel for treatment, vowed local people would have access to the best treatment and support … and in 1980 the Big C Appeal was formed.
