Norwich School Pupil receives prestigious award for volunteering with Big C

Norwich School pupil, Eloise Pitcher, has been awarded the school’s Arnold Award, following her nomination by Norfolk and Waveney cancer charity, Big C.

Eloise, who is in Lower Sixth studying French, German and Chemistry, volunteered for Big C’s Magdalen Street shop for a few hours each week at the end of the winter term of 2017.

Her role included sorting through donations and hanging and tagging them ready for display. Eloise occasionally also helped on the shop floor and on the tills, working alongside shop manager, Cora and other volunteers. She helped support volunteers with additional needs, working with them to hang and prepare the clothes. It was for this hard work and kind support that Eloise was nominated by Big C for the Arnold Award at Norwich School.

Eloise said, “I wanted to volunteer for a charity that does extraordinary work in the local community. I got a huge amount of personal fulfilment from my time at Big C knowing the difference I was making. It was also really nice to meet and work with all the other volunteers and alongside the shop manager, Cora. It was always really interesting to see the types of donations that came in and got sold, it was a really interesting insight into a charity shop.”

Tim Watts, Head of Community Service at Norwich School, says, “We are very grateful that each year Big C offer our students a broad range of interesting and challenging activities. They are able to learn a great deal as a result of their time volunteering with Big C. Eloise made the most of the opportunities that Big C arranged for her and as a result she has received one of the school’s Arnold awards. This award is given for significant contribution to co-curricular activity.”

Dr Chris Bushby, Chief Executive at Big C, said “Many congratulations to Eloise on her award. She is a great example of how young volunteers can make a real difference in the charity sector, while gaining valuable work experience. In her time at Big C, Eloise became a valuable member of the team and went the extra mile to help other volunteers, as well as making a real difference to those in our community affected by cancer.”
