New Chairman for Big C

New Chairman for Big C

Big C, Norfolk and Waveney’s Cancer charity has appointed lay reader and former Marie Curie nurse Carolyn Sexton as its new chairman. She takes over from Philip Blanchflower who steps down from the role.

Carolyn said “my vision is to continue to grow the charity to meet the needs of people and families affected by cancer by a variety of means across Norfolk and Waveney.  I would like to support local research into the prevention and cure of this life threatening, life changing disease.”

She goes on to say “it is a big responsibility but also a privilege to be Chairman of such a respected charity with so much talent and expertise in our team of staff and trustees.”

“Philip has done a wonderful job of steering the charity during his chairmanship and I look forward to taking this work forward” she said.

Big C’s CEO Dr Chris Bushby added, “Philip’s leadership has ensured that Big C as a charity has developed strong foundations both in reputation and financially to continue to deliver its charitable aspirations. He has built strong relationships with the science community which has resulted in more than £10million being invested into world-class cancer research within the science and medical communities at Norwich Research Park. Together with the Trustees he has enabled the expansion of our Big C centres across the county that deliver vital care, support and information for those affected by cancer.”

Reflecting on his chairmanship, Philip added “It has been a great pleasure and privilege to serve Big C as a trustee and chairman over the past 19 years. A pleasure in so far as it has given me great personal satisfaction, and a privilege in that I have worked throughout that time with people whose sole objective has been to work for the benefit of others; and with staff who regard their occupation as a vocation and not just employment.  It is my sincere wish that this marvellous charity continues to enjoy the success it deserves.”

Dr Bushby added, “Big C is determined to expand the accessibility of its care, information and support services within the region, a passion shared by Carolyn, who is qualified both professionally and personally to help us drive forward in this area.”
