Local decorators and friends donate time to give Big C Cancer Support Centre a makeover

James White from J White Painting & Decorating Services Ltd and team members from Paintwell Merchants Norwich joined friends and family to generously volunteer their time and skills to redecorate Norwich Cancer Support Centre.

The team not only gave their time, but also generously donated paint, tools and equipment to ensure the main space, library, counselling and complementary therapy rooms could all be refreshed with a new lick of paint.

This particular centre, based in the grounds of the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital means a great deal to James White, and his wife Jess. “In June 2023 my partner received the news that her father was dying from Sarcoma Cancer. We decided we would like to have our wedding at the hospital so her dad could be there and walk her down the aisle. Big C went above and beyond to give us the most bittersweet day. Not only that, but they have also provided aftercare and counselling. Decorating the Big C centre is a small thank you for all the hard work they have done for our family.”

Jess White and her mum Liz Miller supplied plenty of food to keep the team going and Jess’ brother Darren and partner Abbie Ross joined the enthusiastic group alongside family members Trevor Patmore and Mark Livoy. This is just one of many support and fundraising initiatives being undertaken by the family. Last year saw Darren and their brother Adam complete a 100 mile walk alongside Canaries legend Grant Holt, and this year they will be challenging themselves further with a 150 mile walk over the Easter weekend!

The redesign features calming colour schemes and inspiring artwork that reflect the charity’s mission to provide emotional and practical support to anyone affected by cancer in Norfolk and surrounding counties. 

Hannah Phoenix, Brand and Design Coordinator at Big C shared how delighted the charity was with the results: “We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped and gave up their weekend. The feedback has already been amazing, everyone loves the new colours and how fresh and vibrant the centre looks.”

Craig Strivens, Branch Manager at Paintwell Norwich said: “When James told us about how supportive Big C had been towards him and his family, we couldn’t wait to get involved and help him give something back. Due to our great suppliers, including Tikkurila, Hamilton and Q1 along with the Paintwell Norwich team, we were able to cover most of the costs and even supported with a paintbrush for a few hours.”

The Norwich Cancer Support Centre is just a short walk from the Colney Centre at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, and anyone is welcome to come in.
