Big C invests in future cancer research as demand for support services continues to rise
Big C has opened applications for its 2026 PhD studentship grant round while experiencing increasing demand for its support services.
This year’s grant round comes as Big C reports a strong increase in demand for its services for the first six months of 2026:
- Over 2,000 people have been supported so far in 2026. This is an 11% increase on last year, with more than 1,100 new service users registering for support.
- More than 11,000 support sessions have been delivered across Norfolk, helping people diagnosed, carers and families navigate the impact of a cancer diagnosis.
Big C offers support for people of all ages and backgrounds: 72% of its service users are those directly affected by cancer, 22% are carers and 5% are bereaved, with the majority aged between 51 and 90.
Big C supports anyone affected by cancer – from diagnosis and treatment through to life beyond cancer. Alongside these vital support services, Big C’s PhD studentships offer a unique opportunity for early-career researchers to take part in vital, world-class research into cancer.

“Through our PhD studentship programme, Big C is proud to support the next generation of researchers, right here in Norfolk at the Norwich Research Park.”
Grants of up to £50,000 per studentship are available to support PhD-level research projects to a maximum of £50,000 per PhD with the remaining costs to be covered by the host institution.
Applications are open to PhD researchers based at the University of East Anglia, or institutions across the Norwich Research Park and regional NHS trusts. Eligible projects can span a broad range of cancer-related disciplines, such as:
- Population and behavioural research
- Social sciences
- Basic and translational research
- Clinical or psychosocial research
