Local Business Community Dances to Raise Funds for Norfolk Cancer Charity

The highly anticipated Strictly Big C fundraiser was a resounding success this month, raising over £9,800 for Big C Cancer Charity. The glamorous evening featured dazzling performances from members of the local business community, who joined forces with dancers from Miller Dance to learn a variety of routines and raise money for local people affected by cancer.

The event, held at Holiday Inn Norwich North, was hosted by Richard Miller from Miller Dance and judged by local personalities, TV Broadcaster Amelia Reynolds, Musical Director of Taverham Brass Band Ian Colman MBE, and Director of West End Experience Jo Overton.

Thrilling performances from Sheryl Jackson, Lauren Farley, Holly Guglielmuzzi, Grace Appleby, Kathryn Hirst, Adam Soall, Gordon Simpson, Nicky Burgis, and Jurgita Margelyte showcased their incredible spirit and newfound skills while raising funds.

Volunteers from Norwich & District Photographic Society (NDPS) captured photos throughout the evening, and City College Norwich students helped prepare the dancers with hair and makeup.

Guests also enjoyed performances from local singer and Managing Director of Mindset HR Gemma Crane, and a group dance featuring participants from the 2024 Strictly Big C event.

The winning couple, Sheryl Jackson from Big C’s fundraising group Ladies in League Against Cancer and her dance partner Jon Wendell from Miller Dance, were delighted with their victory, achieving three perfect scores for their tango. Sheryl said, “Participating in the Strictly Big C event was a truly uplifting experience. The support in the room was electric, and winning the glitter ball with my partner Jon was fabulous!”

Karen Vincent, Chief Executive of Big C, expressed her gratitude to the sponsors, Potters Resorts, Virgin Wines, and Kettle Chips. “We are overwhelmed by the generosity and enthusiasm shown by the local business community, our sponsors, and everyone who participated. Special thanks go to Lynn and Richard Miller from Miller Dance, who alongside their talented dancers have been a huge support in making this event possible.”

The funds raised will support the charity’s work in offering support to anyone affected by cancer in Norfolk. Support Centres in Norwich and King’s Lynn are open for people to drop by for a chat, whether it’s the person diagnosed, a family member, or a friend. All services are free of charge, including person-centred counselling, complementary treatments, group support, welfare and benefits guidance, exercise and nutrition programmes, and bereavement support.

Lynn Miller, co-founder of Miller Dance alongside her husband Richard, said, “This is the second year for this event, and it’s lovely to see it growing each year with everyone working together to raise as much money as possible for this fabulous charity.”

Lamberts raises over £7,000 to support local people affected by cancer

Lamberts a local Industrial Supplies & Workwear specialist in Norwich has achieved outstanding results with its fundraising efforts over the past year, to help support Big C Cancer Charity.

From crafting initiatives and the donation of a sunflower field to the organisation of an art sale, and everything in between, the team’s hard work and dedication to the cause has raised an incredible £7,225.88.

Tom Holmes, Events and Engagement Manager at Big C said, “We are deeply grateful to the team at Lamberts Norwich for their outstanding fundraising efforts and support throughout 2024. They have come up with ingenious ways to raise funds throughout the year, and every penny will make such a difference to the lives of local people.”

In March 2024, Managing Director of the family run company, Trina Beare crafted some wonderful bumblebee and ladybird wildflower seed bombs that were sold through Lamberts’ trade counter and office in Norwich as well as at other companies around the city.

Adding to their creations, Trina and the Lamberts Workwear Team created a group of bespoke wooden Easter bunnies that were auctioned off to add to their fundraising efforts. These wonderful spring decorations were given fantastic names including ‘Captain Carrot’, ‘Mary Hoppins’, and ‘Nacho’!

Wooden bunnies made from small pieces of wood, decorated with floral material for neckerchiefs and bonnets.

In April, Sonny, son of Lamberts’ Commercial Manager Paul Gardiner took on the Brighton Marathon to raise further funds for Big C with some of Lamberts’ suppliers sponsoring Sonny’s running kit.

In the summer, after months of growing, Lamberts were able to donate a field packed with thousands of sunflowers to Big C. Over the course of a week in August, staff, volunteers, friends and families all came together to cut the sunflowers and pack them to be sold to local businesses all over the region with all proceeds going to Big C. Not only was this a fantastic fundraising event but wonderful feedback was received on the positive impact being in the outdoors with the flowers had on volunteers’ mental health and wellbeing.

Towards the end of 2024, Lamberts partnered up with Big C to host a charity art sale and exhibition over two days at The Forum, Norwich. Many local artists including the published illustrator Sarah Reilly donated paintings, prints and sculptures as well as pieces created by Lamberts’ staff members, their friends and family!

Trina Beare said: “Our Lamberts team had a great time fundraising for Big C last year! It was incredible to see everyone come together with such passion and dedication for such a worthy local cause. The creativity, and teamwork were truly inspiring, and we’re so proud to have contributed to Big C’s mission.

“We are thrilled to announce that Big C has been chosen as our Charity of the Year 2025 – for a second year in a row! We can’t wait to roll up our sleeves and get cracking on some fantastic ideas we already have in motion… watch this space!”

The generosity, enthusiasm and commitment from all those working at Lamberts and the local community will enable Big C to continue to provide crucial services and support. From 1:1 counselling and complementary therapies, to support groups, welfare guidance, and health and nutrition programmes.

Local decorators and friends donate time to give Big C Cancer Support Centre a makeover

James White from J White Painting & Decorating Services Ltd and team members from Paintwell Merchants Norwich joined friends and family to generously volunteer their time and skills to redecorate Norwich Cancer Support Centre.

The team not only gave their time, but also generously donated paint, tools and equipment to ensure the main space, library, counselling and complementary therapy rooms could all be refreshed with a new lick of paint.

This particular centre, based in the grounds of the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital means a great deal to James White, and his wife Jess. “In June 2023 my partner received the news that her father was dying from Sarcoma Cancer. We decided we would like to have our wedding at the hospital so her dad could be there and walk her down the aisle. Big C went above and beyond to give us the most bittersweet day. Not only that, but they have also provided aftercare and counselling. Decorating the Big C centre is a small thank you for all the hard work they have done for our family.”

Jess White and her mum Liz Miller supplied plenty of food to keep the team going and Jess’ brother Darren and partner Abbie Ross joined the enthusiastic group alongside family members Trevor Patmore and Mark Livoy. This is just one of many support and fundraising initiatives being undertaken by the family. Last year saw Darren and their brother Adam complete a 100 mile walk alongside Canaries legend Grant Holt, and this year they will be challenging themselves further with a 150 mile walk over the Easter weekend!

The redesign features calming colour schemes and inspiring artwork that reflect the charity’s mission to provide emotional and practical support to anyone affected by cancer in Norfolk and surrounding counties.

Hannah Phoenix, Brand and Design Coordinator at Big C shared how delighted the charity was with the results: “We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped and gave up their weekend. The feedback has already been amazing, everyone loves the new colours and how fresh and vibrant the centre looks.

Craig Strivens, Branch Manager at Paintwell Norwich said: “When James told us about how supportive Big C had been towards him and his family, we couldn’t wait to get involved and help him give something back. Due to our great suppliers, including Tikkurila, Hamilton and Q1 along with the Paintwell Norwich team, we were able to cover most of the costs and even supported with a paintbrush for a few hours.

The Norwich Cancer Support Centre is just a short walk from the Colney Centre at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, and anyone is welcome to come in. No appointments are necessary, but the staff and volunteers are always on hand to offer support and guidance, Monday – Friday or on the last Saturday of the month. You can also give Big C a call on 0800 092 7640 or email support@big-c.co.uk

As part of the celebrations, the concert organisers have announced that they will be teaming up with Big C to help raise funds for the vital work they do within the local community.

Kat Jarvis, Fundraising & Events Coordinator at Big C said “We’re absolutely thrilled to have been chosen as the supporting charity for the iconic Classic Ibiza at Blickling Estate. 2025 sees Big C reach its 45th birthday, so this is a brilliant way to celebrate such an achievement, raising funds to support people right here in Norfolk and beyond.”

Launch of the 150-Mile Challenge to raise vital funds

Big C and Norwich City Community Sports Foundation are excited to announce an extraordinary new joint fundraising event for 2025 – The 150-Mile Challenge, powered by Arc Group.

Conceived by Richard Pearce of Barclays Wealth, Canaries legend Grant Holt, and Adam Miller from Arc Group, the 150-Mile Challenge is set to inspire the community while raising vital funds for two prominent local charities.

Starting on 16 April 2025 in King’s Lynn, Richard, Grant and Adam will lead a group of walkers on an epic 150-mile journey around the north of the county. Walking day and night, the challenge will conclude in dramatic style as the group walks onto the pitch at Carrow Road on Good Friday, 18 April when Norwich City take on Portsmouth F.C.

A challenge that gives back and inspires a community

The 150-Mile Challenge is more than just a fundraising effort; it’s a call to action for the local community to come together in support of vital local services. Funds raised will directly, and equally, benefit Big C as well as Norwich City Community Sports Foundation, who use the power of sport to support and inspire our community. The Foundation deliver a variety of programmes across the county with the objective of driving inclusion for people with disabilities, boosting mental health and wellbeing, and supporting disadvantaged people to raise their aspirations.

To make this event as inclusive as possible, the challenge will also include two additional legs:

1. The Virtual Edition (February – March 2025)

Open to everyone, the Community Sports Foundation and Big C are encouraging people inspired by this epic challenge to sign up and complete their own 150 miles throughout February and March 2025. Whether you prefer walking, running, cycling or even swimming the focus is to achieve the 150 miles in your own way. Participants will be supported by both charities with virtual check-ins and the option of local meetups.

With the added incentive of a medal for all those who achieve the suggested fundraising target of £150 you can sign up now via the Community Sports Foundation or Big C websites.

2. The Corporate Edition (May 2025)

Local businesses will have the chance to take part in their own 150-Mile Challenge, designed to foster teamwork while contributing to these incredible causes. Details on this edition will be released in the New Year.

Join the journey

This challenge is about more than just the miles” says Richard Pearce. “It’s about creating a lasting impact for our community, and we hope to see people of all ages and abilities join us in raising funds for these incredible charities. I would like to express my thanks to Uptech, Grocott & Murfit and Cladpsray Solutions for their generous sponsorship of key sections in our 150-Mile Challenge. Your support is a vital component to the success of this challenge.

Big C to Hold Jingle Jangle Fun Run at Thetford Forest

Following its success last Christmas, Big C is holding its second Christmas fun run on Sunday 8 December at High Lodge, Thetford, raising funds to support local people affected by cancer.

‘Jingle Jangle’ is a fun run with a difference. All participants will be given a wristband with bells on, to recreate the magical sound of Santa’s sleigh as they run or walk through the forest.

On the day, families can choose between a 2.5k and a 5k route and participants and spectators alike are being encouraged to dress up in their best festive outfits, santa hats and really enter into the Christmas spirit.

Tom Holmes, events and engagement manager said “We’re very excited to be heading back to beautiful Thetford Forest for our second Jingle Jangle Fun Run. It’s the perfect way to kick start your festive season, get family and friends together, and raise funds at the same time!

“As a local charity, any funds raised will go to supporting people right here in Norfolk and surrounding counties, so come and join in the fun. Whether you want to walk or run the route, or just soak up the atmosphere, we would love to see you!”

On completion of the challenge, those attending the event can enjoy a ‘Christmas Spruce’ market organised by Forestry England. Take in the sights, sounds and smells of Christmas, with mulled wine, festive food and a variety of stalls including Christmas wreaths, skincare, baubles and more.

Matt Billington, from the events team at High Lodge said: “We’re excited to be getting in the festive spirit again this year with Big C on Sunday 8 December. There are lots of seasonal activities to look forward to including the festive fun run, Christmas stalls, and the return of our popular elf trail. Christmas is a time for giving, which is why we are so pleased to partner up with Big C to support their fundraising efforts for all the great work they do.

“Whether you’re taking part in the run or not there is so much to do onsite with plenty of opportunities to get out into the woods this winter. Our onsite attractions, including Go Ape, Adventure Golf, and Lookout Archery will all be decking the halls, and there will be a great selection of Christmas stalls to pick up some beautiful gifts. You won’t want to miss it!”

There is an entry fee of £15 for adults and £1 for children aged 16 and under. The entrance fee helps cover the cost to put on this event but by getting sponsorship to take on the challenge you are helping to support those affected by cancer locally.

Big C welcomes new Chief Executive

Big C is thrilled to announce the appointment of Karen Vincent as the new Chief Executive, starting in early December. Karen comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience from working in strategic roles across public and private sectors.

She has also supported the third sector both as a trustee and as an elected local councillor, where she served as Chair of Broadland District Council through the COVID-19 pandemic and more recently Chair of Norfolk County Council.

With her solid background in financial management and business planning, Karen will help Big C to build on its firm foundations and strengthen them to secure a more sustainable future.

“We are excited to welcome Karen to the Big C team,” said Professor Dylan Edwards, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “Having been a Trustee of Big C since 2021 and with the experience she has gained in the public, private and third sectors, Karen embodies the passion and commitment needed to further our mission to support local people affected by cancer in Norfolk and surrounding counties. We are confident that her vision and leadership will propel us to new heights.”

Karen Vincent said “It is a privilege to join Big C as its new Chief Executive and to work alongside such a dedicated team of staff and volunteers. Having lost loved ones and friends to cancer, this is a cause close to my heart and drives my passion to want to make a difference. I am sensitive to the issues faced by those affected by cancer, as well as the need for early diagnosis, effective treatment and the vital role of information, care and support. It is an honour to lead this wonderful charity forward into its 45th year.”

Rehabilitation sessions offered for recovering cancer patients

Big C is working in partnership with Riverside Leisure Centre to offer rehabilitation sessions for recovering cancer patients. Building on the success of a 12-week pilot held earlier in the year, Places Leisure and Big C are now funding a second group, which will run until Christmas.

Who are the sessions for?

The rehabilitation sessions are open to anyone that has had cancer, is now in remission or well enough to be partaking in physical exercise.

Amy Goreham, Health Academy Educational Facilitator explains “Our rehab sessions offer the opportunity to enjoy exercise in a safe and supportive environment, guided by a cancer rehab practitioner.

“Whether you’re an experienced exerciser or someone who’s never set foot in a gym, rehab can help to improve your fitness and body confidence.

“Our classes give you the opportunity to exercise as part of a group, feel empowered to make informed fitness choices and use equipment with confidence.”

The circuit-based activities are multi-level, ensuring all abilities are catered for, and concentrate on cardio, strength and agility. A buddy system is in place to make sure everyone is supported in the best possible way.

The two-hour sessions involve an hour of activity, followed by an hour of sitting and chatting over a cup of tea. Big C’s Health Academy team are on hand to offer any support or advice needed, but it gives the opportunity for people to chat with other members of the group who may be going through a similar experience.

The idea of the programme is to support people back to fitness following a cancer diagnosis, and help them develop in confidence, so ultimately, they will feel more comfortable about joining a class.

Participant, Alison said “I have so appreciated the opportunity to be welcomed back into a fitness environment, with activities carefully targeted towards building strength, stamina and confidence, alongside such a wonderful group of people each week and am so grateful to the support provided by Big C, David and the other volunteers.

“I was very much hoping to re-join the Leisure Centre at some point following my cancer treatment, but the sessions provided me with the perfect stepping stone to come back, something I probably wouldn’t have felt comfortable doing yet without the rehab course. I still do not feel ready to join the classes I used to do pre cancer but think this course is gradually building my confidence to get there eventually.”

Qualified instructors

David Lane, a Qualified Level 4 Cancer Rehabilitation Practitioner who runs the sessions said “This is the first time we have had a Cancer Rehabilitation Class at Riverside Leisure Centre, I feel very proud to be part of it. The group is hugely diverse with abilities, ages and experiences, all brought together by exercise. Sessions have been designed by participants feedback and have evolved to be fully inclusive to meet all individual’s needs. I am looking forward to continuing to provide a safe and friendly environment for people to exercise in.”

Cancer Rehab patient seated on exercise bike with instructor explaining controls.

Volunteer, Nell, started as a participant and now helps the weekly group “Big C supported me from diagnosis, through treatment and on my ongoing journey. I enjoy the zoom Yoga and Pilates classes (Big C) and when the opportunity for a face-to-face rehab class at Riverside Leisure Centre came up, I jumped at it.

“The sessions have exceeded my expectations – the group spirit is strong, the fun, laughter and support palpable and heard.”

nell, volunteer

“David, our instructor, is aware of individual issues and goals and he structures sessions with options around the circuit so that nobody fails. He allows us to make our own choices giving us autonomy over our bodies. I feel that this is so empowering for those affected by cancer.

“I’m now a volunteer for Big C at these sessions, and love meeting and chatting with new participants and regulars particularly during the ‘tea in a circle’ after the workout.

“If you’re apprehensive about coming into a gym class don’t be – we all look forward to meeting you.”

If you are interested in joining the group, please get in contact with Big C by calling 0800 092 7640 or you can email the team who can provide further information and do an initial screening before getting you started. Bookings can be made each week, so there is no pressure to join in every session.

Big C launches unique family support programme

A cancer diagnosis can be very hard to explain to a child. Whether it is the child going through treatment, a sibling or the parents themselves. Big C has therefore launched a groundbreaking new programme of holistic care and support to offer children with a cancer diagnosis and their families.

Working in collaboration with the Jenny Lind Children’s Hospital at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH), the local cancer charity has developed a support package, which can be accessed by anyone in the region. Whether the child is receiving treatment at NNUH, Addenbrookes or further afield, or they are affected by a family member going through a diagnosis, a new dedicated family support team is on hand to offer guidance and work with the family in whatever way is needed, including psychological support, counselling and play therapy. This complements the Teen and Young Adult (TYA) Group, which already enables young people affected by cancer to gain peer, emotional and practical support.

Thanks to the generous support of the Ladies in League Against Cancer (LILAC), a voluntary fundraising group which raises funds to support the work of Big C, a newly adapted area has been created at the Big C Centre in the grounds of the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital. Offering a calm, child friendly space with sensory lighting, bean bags, a play station, toys, games, arts and crafts, it is an area for families to enjoy, away from the hospital environment in between treatment and appointments.

Brightly coloured furmishings in the family support room

LILAC have also funded the role of an educational psychologist which is vital in helping children cope and in ensuring positive long-term adjustment to a cancer diagnosis. The educational psychologist has the expertise in engaging in holistic assessments of children and young people, creating a detailed profile of their strengths and needs both in terms of their learning and cognitive abilities as well as their emotional wellbeing.

Family Support Officer colouring with a child

Dr Melanie Pascale, director of charitable operations at Big C said “We are absolutely delighted to be able to offer this unique service to families in Norfolk and surrounding counties. Cancer affects not just the patient, but the entire family, and through this new initiative at Big C, with the assistance and expertise of a dedicated educational psychologist, we will be able to offer emotional and practical support, to help navigate that difficult path.”

NNUH consultant Jo Ponnampalam said “The Paediatric Oncology team at the Jenny Lind Children’s Hospital are delighted to hear that Big C Cancer Charity has extended its services to children with a cancer diagnosis and their families/carers. The family support programme will offer a great opportunity to further enhance the holistic support these children and families currently receive. They will be able to access other therapies like reflexology, massage etc that are currently not offered by the NHS; The Big C building offers a comfortable space away from where they receive their treatments, within the grounds of the hospital thereby making it convenient for children/families to visit as it is only steps away. We look forward to working with the Big C team to continue to provide a high-quality holistic service to our patient population.”

Sammy Adcock and her family are most complimentary about the new service now available to them “I am so grateful for this space that has opened at Big C, Norwich. The family support room is so welcoming with a variety of activities for children of all ages to be engaged with. This enabled me to have a lovely open conversation with support worker Emma without having to worry about the children. The ambience is so calming. Every aspect has been so well planned, from the complementing colours to the sound of the water feature coming through from the garden. It’s amazing and I can’t wait to come back!”

Family playing a board game in the family support room

Service user, Ali Howell said “It’s been three years since my diagnosis, and Big C has been an incredible support for myself and my family. I’ve benefited from complementary therapy and counselling services, as well as access to a nurse for advice and to ask questions. This new family support service is so very needed in the county. The impact of a diagnosis has a profound impact on the whole family, and especially the children. The new service will provide a much-needed space for the children to gain the additional emotional support and processing space they need, as well as being a bridge to support their schools. And a place for families to be held and to access the support they need to navigate life with a cancer diagnosis.”

Big C Cancer Charity Chief Executive steps down

After nine years of dedicated service to Big C Cancer Charity, Chief Executive Dr Christopher Bushby will be stepping down, in September. Chris has made this difficult decision due to health reasons.

Throughout Chris’ tenure, his leadership, passion, and unwavering commitment to the charity’s mission has been instrumental in driving the charity’s efforts to provide outstanding cancer support, when and where people need it, now and for the future.

Under Chris’ guidance and the development of a strong management team, Big C has invested in its infrastructure with the growth of support services, the creation of a Health Academy and a Virtual Support Centre.

A variety of brightly coloured armchairs with a small round coffee table and vase of flowers

We are immensely grateful for Chris’ valuable contributions and the impact he has had on the organisation. His leadership and dedication to the charity has left an indelible mark and Big C will continue to build upon his legacy and the important work in supporting people affected by cancer.

Chris’ achievements include:

  • Consolidation of the Big C brand enabling it to transcend boundaries and have a strong physical presence in the high street and across all media platforms.
  • Establishment of three purpose-built cancer support centres at King’s Lynn, Great Yarmouth and recently in the centre of Norwich to support those affected by cancer.
  • The ring-fencing of research funding to ensure continuity of investment in cancer-related PhDs within the region.
  • Doubling Big C’s turnover and building reserves so the charity is well positioned to endure future external challenges.
  • Optimisation of retail trading operations creating increased profitability.
  • Strengthening the fundraising and communications team to aid innovationand develop new income streams.
  • Developing a supportive culture which is empathetic and understands the challenges in individuals’ lives.

Trustees have been aware of this decision for some time and an announcement will follow in due course for the advertisement of the new Chief Executive position, to ensure the leadership of the charity is in the best place for future progress and development.

The President, Vice President, Board of Trustees, staff, and volunteers would like to take this opportunity to thank Chris for his commitment and all he has achieved over the past nine years and wish him well as he focuses on his personal health.

“It has been a privilege to work with staff, volunteers and trustees and those individuals who have raised funds for Big C. They have inspired me with their selflessness and dedication to supporting cancer patients, their families, and communities. I know I leave Big C in safe hands for the future.”
