Metallic tracers to probe the inner workings of cancer cells

£50,139 for a UEA School of Chemistry research project into metal based cancer medicines.

Targeting cancer cells with metal containing drugs allows for both imaging and cell destruction without affecting normal cells, something that greatly reduces toxicity for patients.

Internationally published research from UEA has highlighted the possibility of creating tracer molecules that can be tracked all the way inside a cancer cell to show the effects of different treatments. Medicines have been made with platinum but these have several disadvantages.

This project will look at three metals in particular - vanadium, rhenium and ruthenium; all of which have been shown to be potent at killing cancer cells in low doses.

This research could lead to effective low toxic treatment for those fighting cancer.
