Treatment comparison

Comparing results to optimise patient treatment

Autumn 2008
£12,000 to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital to analyse patient data for improved treatment.

Modern radiotherapy makes use of a technique called Intensity Modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) where the beam of radiation is varied across the volume of the tumour. This is a complex process as each patient’s treatment has to be individually planned and checked. Traditionally for checking treatment a process called 2D array has been used, but another technique called portal dosimetry has been introduced which is more efficient. Both of these are currently used at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Foundation Trust.

This project will compare and analyse all the data collected from both processes over three years for IMRT patients with a view to streamlining the process and assessing whether portal dosimetry can be used alone. If this is the case then more patients could be treated with this technique.
