Organising and promoting a fundraising event is a challenging and rewarding experience. A fundraising event can be anything from a jumble sale to a pumpkin growing competition – anything in fact that captures the public’s imagination and allows you to raise money for The Big C qualifies as a good idea!
Your first port of call when organising an event should always be the Big C Fundraising Office. We are here to support and guide you through any legal implications and advise on how best to go about the collecting and handling of donated monies. Contact us on 01603 619900 or by e-mail to enquiries@big-c.co.uk
We have provided some pointers below to give you some idea of what will be required of you.
1. Get as many people as possible involved. This is not something to be shy about and you’ll probably find that the number of people increases dramatically as the word spreads. Inform colleagues, friends, families, members of clubs and societies you belong to – anyone and everyone! If your idea is a good one, people will want to get involved in some way.
2. When choosing the date, time and venue for your event, take care to ensure that you don’t clash with any major sporting event, state occasion or a time when people are likely to be away.
3. If it’s a big event you may need to consider parking availability, refreshments and health and safety. Inform your local police and council of the time, date and route of any event in a public place, and make sure you are aware of any licenses that may be needed. Contact us for more details.
4. Stick to your budget and try to maximise the amount of cash you raise. There are plenty of ways to generate income: ticket sales, corporate sponsorship, collection tins, raffles, refreshment sales and programme advertising being just a few. Be cunning, and use your persuasive powers to get as much for free as possible!
5. Publicise your event in the local papers and on the radio. The local media are usually interested in this kind of thing, and will be more than likely to run with the story if yours is a big event. The fundraising team can help you with all aspects of publicity. Posters are easily made and put up and don’t forget good old word of mouth.
All fundraising for The Big C must be conducted in a responsible and legal manner. If you are unsure about any aspect of your event, please do get in touch with us - we have plenty of experience of making sure these things go smoothly. All monies raised for The Big C belong to The Big C so once you have collected the money we would be grateful if you could deliver it to us as quickly as possible so that it may be put to use.
Printed items must conform to the charity’s design and legal requirements and our charity number must appear on any relevant material.
