Ultrasound equipment

Faster service for pleural effusion sufferers

Autumn 2010

£28,000 for the purchase of an ultrasound machine at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Pleural effusion is the accumulation of fluid in the pleura area of the lungs which leads to breathing difficulties due to limited lung expansion; it is very common with lung cancer.

This new machine takes some of the strain off the radiology department but also allows for a 'one-stop' clinic where patients can have their scan (to highlight the exact area for drainage) as well as the placement of a catheter to relieve the fluid.

With the two stages completed in one place waiting time is significantly reduced meaning an increase in quality of life for the patient.
