Additional ultrasound equipment
Spring 2009
£71,600 to the James Paget University Hospital for an additional ultrasound machine.
Ultrasound scanners use sound waves to build up a picture of the inside of the body and can be used for investigating a range of cancers.
The new machine will provide additional facilities which can be used to perform urgent scans when there is a suspicion of cancer. Currently these patients have to return at a later date for a scan and possible biopsy. The extra facility will enable the scan and the biopsy to be done during a single visit, meaning more rapid diagnosis and thus allowing earlier referral for treatment. Overall this will offer an improved service for these patients.
