Increased breast screening facilities
Spring 2007
£52,910 to the James Paget University Hospital for the purchase of an additional ultrasound machine.
The breast screening service has seen a 30% increase in patients since the programme was extended in 2004, with a corresponding increase in the number recalled for further investigation which includes ultrasound.
As a recent development in potentially malignant cases, surgeons want ultrasound examinations and core biopsies of lymph nodes. This enables them to better plan surgery and treatment for breast cancer patients, but imposes time and capacity restraints on the single ultrasound machine. A second machine will offer improved service to the patient and shorter waiting times for diagnosis or treatment.
