Accurate limb measurement

Improved treatment for skin cancer and plastic surgery patients

Autumn 2012

£14,112 to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

Cancer treatment can cause a condition called lymphoedema, where fluid accumulates in areas of the body, causing swelling.  This can be painful and lead to infections, so early diagnosis and treatment can make a big difference.

This grant will help with the purchase of an instrument called a perometer.  This allows extremely accurate measurements using laser technology, meaning that even very slight swelling can be detected.  The perometer will have added benefits for treating patients undergoing chemotherapy on individual limbs: accurate measurement of the limb’s volume makes it easier to calculate the correct dosage to treat the cancer and minimise side effects.
