£100,000 for Big C and Counting!

Our fantastic fundraising friends from South Norfolk, the ‘Bunwell Six’ are celebrating the super-sized achievement of reaching a fundraising milestone of £100,000 on behalf of Big C.

A Valentine’s themed fundraiser in February also marked fifteen years of fundraising commitment to the charity for Ann Dent, Joy Tunmore, Janet Skidmore, Norma Howes, Kathleen Flowerday and Ursula Jackson, which began following the loss of Joy’s husband and Ann’s brother to cancer.

Ann Dent said, “When we first started raising money for Big C, we were aiming for a few thousand pounds, but we received such fantastic support from our friends, family and the local community that it encouraged us to continue. I don’t think any of us ever considered we could reach £100,000! Unfortunately, most people have been touched by cancer in some way, which makes a charity like Big C close to their hearts. Over the past 15 years, several other family members of the group have had, or been lost to cancer and two of the six of us have also suffered from breast cancer.”

Some of the fundraising ideas and events held by the group over the years include ploughman’s lunches and floral demonstrations by Joy and friends for more than 100 people and ‘salmon and strawberry’ evenings in Ann’s grain store.

One of Ann’s favourite memories is a visit from a member of the Royal Household, the Queen’s pastry chef, Colin Alderson, who Ann and Joy had approached whilst on a cruise. He travelled from Harrogate, at his own cost, to Old Buckenham village hall where he was guest at an ‘upstairs/downstairs’ themed event, entertaining everyone with tales of his life moving with and cooking for the queen.

Clive Evans, Director of Income Generation and Communications for Big C, said “£100,000 is a phenomenal figure to have raised and we are thrilled that Ann, Joy and the South Norfolk ladies have reached this milestone. It’s a great opportunity to say a huge thank you to them for their valuable support over the past 15 years. They are a wonderful group of people who demonstrate the power of local fundraising, combined with hard work and passion. They have rallied their whole community to achieve something special and improve the lives of those affected by cancer in Norfolk and Waveney.”

At Big C, we know that cancer can affect us all in different ways, but with your support, and the support of fundraising groups like the Bunwell Six, we can be there to make sure that local people get the very best care when affected by cancer.

You can support Big C this April with the Big Cuppa Week, find out how here
