Big C strengthens its senior management team

On the eve of celebrating its 35th year, Norfolk’s Cancer charity, the Big C has strengthened its core senior management team with two new appointments. The move is part of a re-structuring investment made by Chief Executive Dr Chris Bushby to both upskill the team and to equip the charity for the challenges it has set itself moving forward.

Former Operations Director for the Red Cross in East Anglia, and then its International department, Clive Evans becomes Director of Income Generation. Dale Coleman, former Company Secretary and accountant to the Parkside Community Trust and The base Community Trusts in Norwich is the new Director of Corporate Services. They join Kate Morgan, Company Secretary, who has been at Big C since 2009 and Nikki Morris, Director of Operations and Deputy CEO, and are based at the charity’s headquarters in Castle Meadow.

Former gynaecology oncology specialist nurse, teacher and lecturer Nikki Morris has been employed by the organisation for more than four years, initially as head of clinical services to develop support and information services and increase the portfolio of partnership services delivery. Her role has been expanded to take the strategic lead for grant provision and includes a new educational remit working alongside schools, colleges and universities.

Kate Morgan, a chartered secretary, has many years experience working within both the voluntary and charitable sectors. 

“These appointments come during a period of change for the organisation,” said Dr Bushby, himself in his role for just six months.” I am delighted to welcome Clive and Dale. When I joined Big C, I inherited a charity with a remarkable foundation established over 35 years. The charity has many and significant milestones and this team will be building on its heritage to create new milestones for the future.

“Now on the verge of celebrating those 35 years, beginning in January, we will be thanking the people who have helped us raise more than £25million which has provided support services and centres, been invested in world-class medical research, as well as funding diagnostic and treatment equipment to completely change the experience of cancer patients and their families in Norfolk and Waveney. We need investment in our people to ensure we can drive the charity forward.”

“This team has the experience and skills needed to execute our vision for the future that we will deliver through five very clear commitments in five specific areas,” he said.

Dr Bushby outlined these as developing information, care and support services through the community and Big C centres; investing in world-class research, especially in the Norwich Research Park; continuing to financially invest in diagnostic treatment equipment for use by local clinicians; and to develop and increase the retail offering through expanding the number of shops and retail outlets to generate awareness of the Big C brand and generate funds. 

One new area of focus for Big C is developing an educational programme for regional schools, colleges and universities. “We want to encourage tomorrow’s experts in all aspects of cancer research, treatment and care. Through the education programme we will encourage young people to determine how they can develop career opportunities to benefit this sector and participate in how to achieve world-class outcomes for cancer patients,” he said
